How does scanning sheet music to MIDI work?
The score is read note by note — pitches, rhythm, key and time signature. From that, a MusicXML score is built, and the MIDI file is derived from it. That means the MIDI reflects the actual notation, not an audio guess.
MIDI or MusicXML — which one do I want?
MIDI is for listening and for DAWs: it stores pitches and timing. MusicXML is for editing and printing: it keeps slurs, dynamics and layout, and opens in MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico. You get both here — same recognition, two exports.
Which scans and photos work best?
Printed, monophonic single-staff parts — as a photo, scan or PDF. We measure the staff line spacing before processing: below 10 pixels we reject the capture instead of guessing — move closer or re-scan at a higher resolution.
Is it really free?
The beta is free, no account needed. A fair subscription will follow once quality meets our own bar. Recognition is beta: please double-check any measures the ledger flags.
